According to the World Health Organisation, 75% of us experience sub-health, which means you aren’t really sick but may be tired and have trouble sleeping. Perhaps you are putting on weight but unsure why and don’t have a diagnosable illness. Sub-health is the intermediate state between being healthy and falling sick. If you are in a constant state of sub-health, your immunity may suffer, your organs will age faster and can lead to more serious ailments especially if you are experiencing sub-health for a long period of time.
In TCM, every individual has a unique body constitution, or body type, which changes over time. Your body constitution affects how you feel and behave, and how your body responds to causes of illness. Undesirable health conditions and illnesses arise when the body becomes imbalanced.
To show how one might reduce or avoid imbalances, explore our guide to nine different body constitutions in TCM. One thing to note: like many people, you may be a mixture of body constitutions. If you think this is the case, you can refer to the type that corresponds with your dominant symptoms.
Weight management
Obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions, including: -
- Heart disease and stroke
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Gallbladder disease and gallstones
- Osteoarthritis
- Gout
- Breathing problems, such as sleep apnea (when a person stops breathing for a short time during sleep) and asthma
TCM adopts a holistic approach towards weight management allowing one to not just lose body weight but maintain it at a healthy level, carried out safely under the strict guidance of a registered TCM physician. For as long as the patients adhere to a recommended healthy lifestyle, the risk of weight rebound is low.
