What are the types of herbs being prescribed?
At Sunway TCM Centre, herbs are provided either raw or in concentrated granules depending on patient's preference and current condition. Generally, we prescribe concentrated granules in most cases.
The traditional Chinese medicinal herbs are extracted into granules by using modernised extraction and concentration technologies to replicate the method of preparing medicinal decoction. The standardised concentrated granules provide convenience to patients whereby it allows immediate consumption by just dissolving the granules in hot water instantly. These granules should have the same degree of curative efficacy, taste, aroma and flavour as traditionally prepared medicinal decoction.
Raw herbs (dried or fresh herbs)
In some cases, raw herbs are prescribed to patients to prepare as decoction. This involves boiling fresh or dried herbs in water for a long period of time, usually a few hours, in order extract the herbs' water-soluble constituents. The traditional method is to simmer the herbs until the liquid is reduced to half. This step needs to be repeated twice and mixed before consumption. As this method is time-consuming and inconvenient, it is less preferred by patient.
Raw herbs may also be prescribed for the use of hot packs or herbal bath (external use).
Are these herbs safe to consume?
Sunway TCM Centre uses concentrated granules from established and reputable manufacturers which produce premium herbal extracts and herbs.
These herbs have passed a series of Quality Assurance and Quality Controlled tests. Each batch of concentrated granules comes with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) which documents the herbs are safe to be consumed.
How long is the whole course of treatment?
For treating of chronic conditions, Chinese medicine is usually taken daily for several months or years, whereas the course for treating acute conditions varies from days to weeks.
